Michter’s Distillery: A Journey Through Time
Blog
Origins and Legacy
Michter’s is a brand that has truly stood the test of time. Its origins date back to the 1750s when a group of Swiss-German farmers settled in Pennsylvania and began distilling rye whiskey. This region was known for producing some of the finest rye whiskeys in the world, and Michter’s quickly became a staple of this tradition.
The Pennsylvania Era
Originally known as Shenk’s and later as Bomberger’s , Michter’s Distillery had a storied past. Abraham Bomberger, a Pennsylvania Dutchman, bought the distillery in the mid-1800s. However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that the Michter’s name emerged. Lou Forman, the operating owner at the time, came up with the Michter’s name by combining his sons’ names, Michael and Peter .
During the 1970s and 1980s , Michter’s Original Sour Mash Whiskey gained popularity. The term “Sour Mash” refers to the whiskey production process, similar to making sourdough bread, where previously fermented mash is used as a starter for new fermentation. Michter’s Original Sour Mash stood out for its unique taste, distinct from both rye and bourbon. Unfortunately, the distillery closed its doors officially on Valentine’s Day, 1990 .
A Triumphant Return
The story didn’t end there. In 2012 , Joseph (Joe) Magliocco and his mentor Richard (Dick) Newman acquired the rights to the Michter’s trademark. The brand was legally abandoned and available for a mere $275—the fee to file the paperwork. Magliocco, who owned Chatham Imports, saw Michter’s as more than just a convenient brand; it held personal nostalgia from his days as a Michter’s salesman in college. With this purchase, Michter’s history took a new direction—it became a Kentucky brand .
