BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for making fine furniture. Our Boekenhoutskloof label features seven chairs; amongst them the country-style split splat chair made in the neo-classical style with a shouldered top rail and thonged seat from the late 18th century. Then there's the Sandveld chair that has two back rails and a thonged seat which made its appearance in the second quarter of the 19th century. The transitional Tulbagh chair was made in the late 18th century, it has a plain back and a shaped top rail with half-round opening. The chairs on our wine label all pay tribute to the skills of the 18th century craftsmen and their achievements in creating beauty from natural sources, just like the pursuit of fine wine-making.
The 2015 vintage has been one of Boekenhoutskloofs greatest vintages to date, offering wines with wonderful balance, ripe fruit and restraint. A cold winter resulted in great berry set with even veraison and the absence of damaging heat spikes and the mild growing conditions all contributed to the quality.
The grapes underwent a cold maceration in stainless steel fermentation vessels and then fermented at temperatures between 27° and 30° with frequent pump-overs and occasional delestage to extract aromas, colour and tannins. After alcoholic fermentation, a prolonged malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in 225 litre barriques. The wine was matured for 20 months in 60% new French oak barrique from preferred coopers, Sylvain and Saury.
A refined, complex nose offers aromas of cassis, dark berry fruit, pencil shavings and whiffs of spicy tobacco. Fine-grained powdery tannins are juxtaposed against both black and red berry fruit, hints of thyme and graphite and a vibrant acidity on the midpalate. The wine is lithe and multi-layered with exceptional balance, showing fine texture and a youthful elegance, suggesting significant ageing potential. Red berry fruit persists on the finish with notes of garrigue and fennel seeds
The Wine Advocate
"The nose of the 2016 Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon features dark red fruit, with dark berries, dark cherry and black plum. There is a touch of oak nuance here, and the wine has a mineral edge. On the palate, the wine showcases more on the mineral and tannic side, growing tarter on the mid-palate. The finish is grippy and tight still, so enjoy this with food or cellar it for a couple of years. 20,000 bottles were made."
