CHATEAU LAMOTHE-BOUSCAUT BLANC
The vines of Lamothe-Bouscaut are on average 35 years old and grow on deep, gravel soils near the Garonne River. The vineyards are planted to red with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, and for the whites 20% Semillon and 80% Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards are managed sustainably in order to respect the environment. Labouring the soils and keeping ground cover between rows is essential, with spraying reduced to a minimum. The vines are Guyot-trained and are looked after by five vineyard workers.
In 2016, Bordeaux had a wet spring, which proved to be helpful given the drought that was to follow. The flowering in early June was remarkably successful, with almost 12 weeks of hot summer weather. Dry whites were harvested in September in fine weather. 2016 was a later harvest and in keeping, in terms of timing, with what they call 'classic' Bordeaux vintages.
The grapes for this wine were hand harvested. The bunches of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were pressed and the juice partially racked and chilled for 24 hours. Afterwards, the must was transferred to oak barrels, of which 30% was new, where it was vinified on its fine lees. After fermentation, the wine was aged for eight months in oak with bâtonnage taking place once a month.
The nose offers fresh citrus and floral notes. On the palate, it is well-rounded, with grapefruit and pineapple flavours. The oak is subtle and well-integrated, giving the wine good body and balance, with a long and elegant finish.
