LA DAME DE MONTROSE SAINT ESTEPHE 2021

La Dame de Montrose, the esteemed second wine of Château Montrose, was introduced in 1983 to honor Yvonne Charmolüe, who managed the estate from 1944 to 1960. Crafted with the same meticulous care as the grand vin, La Dame de Montrose offers a distinct expression of the Saint-Estèphe terroir.

The 2021 vintage was marked by contrasting climatic conditions, highlighting the resilience of Montrose's terroir. A mild, dry start to the season was followed by a rainy, cool spring, increasing disease pressure in the vineyard. However, the estate's experienced team effectively managed these challenges. Improved weather in early June facilitated successful flowering, while the cool, dry summer slightly delayed veraison. September brought rising temperatures and ample sunshine, allowing the grapes to reach full ripeness.

The 2021 blend consists of 53% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. The wine underwent 12 months of aging in French oak barrels, with 30% being new oak, imparting subtle complexity.

In the glass, La Dame de Montrose 2021 presents a burgundy red hue with garnet highlights. The nose is delicate, offering floral and spicy notes that evolve into fresh fruit aromas of cherry and blackcurrant, complemented by subtle empyreumatic hints. On the palate, it is clean, delicate, round, and well-balanced, showcasing the wine's elegance and approachability.

Critics have praised this vintage for its refinement. James Suckling awarded it 92-93 points, noting its fine and silky character with supple tannins and fresh blue and purple fruit flavors. Jane Anson rated it 90/100, highlighting its elegance and classic Montrose signature. Neal Martin provided a range of 89-91 points, appreciating its fresh, saline entry and medium-bodied profile.
