De Martino Las Cruces Old Vine Malbec Carmenere

The diversity of Chile’s landscapes is expressed in this series of wines from eight exceptional vineyards. A precise combination of climate, soil, grape variety and viticulture is combined with traditional, natural winemaking that respects the personality of each vineyard to produce unique wines that faithfully respect De Martino’s style.

From D.O Cachapoal, the Old Vine Series is a range of characterful, irreplicable and unique wines from old vines in the southern part of central Chile. Las Cruces is a field blend of Malbec and Carmenere from a 2.8-hectare vineyard planted in 1957. Limited number of bottles. Great ageing potential.

Vines are grown on soils consisting of decomposed granite deposits formed during the Jurassic period. This soil profile boasts excellent filtration and drainage due to its high sand content. The levels of clay are low, but enough to maintain adequate humidity in the summer months (7-15%), conditions which allow this to be a dry-farmed vineyard.

Situated at 161m above sea level the vineyards where this wine comes from benefit from a Mediterranean climate with the micro-climate where the vineyards are situated considered mild by Chilean standards as temperatures rarely exceed 30°C due to the vineyard’s proximity to the Cachapoal River which directs ocean breezes from the coast into the valley. Both, Malbec and Carménère are well-adapted to this climate and the best years are those in which the temperatures are not excessively high, thereby allowing the Malbec to ripen slowly.

The grapes are destemmed and the whole berries (no crushing involved) are gently placed in tank, undergoing cold maceration for seven days. Alcoholic fermentation is spontaneous, once finished the wine was left in contact with the skins for 20 days before being racked into 5,000 lts Foudres.  The wine was then aged in 5.000 litre Austrian foudres for two years.

Bright ruby clour, with intense aromatics of ripe dark berry fruit and floral(violet) note. Shows a fresh acidity backed with a ripe fruit core and fine grained tannins. Medium bodied and complex, with a long finish and great intensity.

Limited edition. 3660 bottles produced.
