DOMAINE GLANTENAY POMMARD

Guillaume Glantenay is the sixth generation of his family to run this domaine, which he took over from his father in 2013. His father still works the estate’s eight hectares of vineyard, four of which are in Volnay, while Guillaume runs the new cuverie. For those who remember the wines from his father’s time, Guillaume has brought a greater elegance to the wines, and a lovely purity of fruit. He uses about 15-20% whole bunch to lift the perfumes and low toast oak to support rather than mask these aromas.

The Pommard is sourced from three different plots located in the commune of Pommard. The oldest plot has 80 year old vines which produce small yields of concentrated grapes. The soils here are marl and limestone with a chalky marl subsoil. The crops are tended to by hand and are consistently monitored during the year in order to keep the amount of treatments required to a minimum.

2018 began with a warm spring and budburst in early April. The entire vintage continued ahead of schedule, with flowering in mid-June followed by a rapid fruit set. Ripening continued at a fast pace with hot summer temperatures. More leaves than normal were left on the vines for protection against sunburn. Fortunately hydric stress was avoided thanks to the water reserves from winter and spring rainfall. Good quantities of healthy fruit were harvested early from 27th August.

The fruit was hand-picked and thoroughly sorted, first in the vineyard and again in the winery. The grapes were destemmed and cold soaked in stainless-steel vats before fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The maceration and fermentation lasted a total of 21 days with daily punch-downs and pump-overs. The wine was then aged on fine lees in French oak barrels, 20% of which was new, for 15 months. It was bottled without fining or filtering.

This Pommard has a beautifully perfumed nose with precise notes of pure blackberry and black cherry fruit and a touch of clove spice. The palate is well structured with fine-grained tannins which result in a layered, elegant finish.
