Domaine Lucien Muzard Et Fils Puligny-Montrachet Blanc 2018
Lucien Muzard handed over the reins to his sons Claude and Hervé, who immediately began Domaine bottling their wine rather than selling it in bulk to négociants.
In 2005 Muzard went organic in their vineyards and gained certification for biodynamic farming with the 2008 vintage. Their decision to work biodynamically was taken to sustain and improve the health of their land. It has also had a noticeable effect on the wines as the quality and complexity has evolved beautifully over the years.
The average age of the vines is 55 years. Chardonnay grape variety is grown on clay and chalky soil with Cordon de Royat pruning. Harvesting is all carried out by hand in small cases of 10 kgs, Reducing vine yields and adoption of some modern winemaking techniques has resulted in spotlessly pure, great value Burgundy. They started using conveyor belts rather than pumps to keep crushing to an absolute minimum as well as acquiring a new temperature-controlled fermentation facility with new wooden vats and a brand new precision-controlled press. In 2005 they also converted to managing the vineyard organically and gained certification for biodynamic farming in 2008.
On arrival at the winery, the grapes are inspected and selected at the sorting table. The winemaking is traditional without any use of cultivated yeasts. The grapes are very gently pressed and the must is racked off. After fermentation, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 10 months with 2/3 of new oak.
Magnificent straw yellow with the pronounced aromas of smokey almond often associated with the richness of Puligny-Montrachet. The wine is round with sweet almond and honey notes and yet taut acidity. The oak is present but nicely integrated. All in all this wine is powerful, elegant and memorable. Beautiful with fish in a creamy sauce or with lobster thermidor.
