Evaristo is a modern and easy-drinking wine made by up-and-coming winemaker António Braga. A master in the art of blending, he marries indigenous Portuguese and international grapes sourced from across the Lisbon wine region. A celebration of all things Lisbon, the crow on the label is a nod to Saint Vincent, the city’s patron saint. Legend has it that a flock of crows escorted the ship that returned his remains to the city and still keep watch over the cathedral where he is buried to this day.

The grapes for the Evaristo are sourced from carefully selected growers with vineyards across the Lisbon wine region, giving António a wide range of fruit with different characteristics to work with and maximum blending options. Coastal vineyards situated to the west of the region experience a cooler microclimate and produce grapes with great freshness and aromatics. Vineyards found further inland are more sheltered from these cooling influences and bring a riper aroma profile and body to the blend.

The 2019 growing season in the Lisbon region began with a cooler than average spring marked by high levels of rainfall. This slightly delayed bud burst, but replenished the water reserves in the soil and these sustained the vines through the warm and dry summer. There were particularly high daytime temperatures in August, but these were counteracted by cooler nights, and the grapes underwent a well paced ripening period, accumulating great intensity of flavour balanced by a vibrant acidity.

Upon arrival at the winery, the Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet grapes were destemmed and crushed. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel vats at controlled temperatures of 26°C and lasted for around eight days with regular punch downs and pump overs. Following fermentation and malolactic fermentation, the wines were kept in stainless steel and no oak was used in the winemaking in order to retain the vibrant fruit flavours. Following careful analysis and numerous tastings, the final blend was assembled, left to marry and then bottled in the spring following the harvest.

A blend of 50% Touriga Nacional , 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah/Shiraz, 10% Alicante Bouschet this is deep ruby in colour. The nose boasts vibrant aromas of ripe cherries, juicy blackberries and blackcurrants. On the palate, plush tannins give a lovely mouthfeel and a crisp acidity carries the mellow fruit flavours onto the smooth finish.
