The Glenallachie 17 year old Mizunara & Oloroso Sherry Cask Speyside Single Malt

Established in 1967, GlenAllachie remained relatively unknown until 2017, when it was acquired from Pernod Ricard by industry legend Billy Walker and his partners, Trisha Savage and Graham Stevenson. Since then, the distillery has flourished under independent Scottish ownership, producing exceptional single malts that emphasise craftsmanship and quality. GlenAllachie’s commitment to traditional methods and innovation has solidified its reputation as one of Speyside’s hidden gems.

The GlenAllachie 17-Year-Old Mizunara & Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish is a remarkable single malt Scotch whisky that showcases the distillery’s expertise in wood management. Bottled at 50% ABV, this expression is part of GlenAllachie’s Masters of Wood series, highlighting the use of rare and exceptional casks.

This whisky is matured in a combination of Mizunara oak barrels and Oloroso Sherry puncheons and hogsheads. Mizunara oak, a rare Japanese wood, is seldom used for whisky maturation due to its high cost and tendency to leak. However, it imparts unique notes of sweet spices, sandalwood, and charred oak. The Oloroso casks, sourced from Spain’s Andalusia region, contribute rich nutty and dried fruit flavors, enhancing the whisky’s complexity.

The nose presents aromas of heather honey, dried orange peel, and crystallized ginger, intertwined with cocoa, toasted tobacco leaves, and fresh vanilla pods. On the palate, baking spices complement dried blood orange and grilled honeycomb, leading to bursts of rich cocoa, poached cinnamon apples, fig syrup, pecans, and demerara sugar. The finish is long and indulgent, delivering layers of spice, fruit, and oak.
