Kilkerran

Kilkerran, derived from the Gaelic ‘Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain’ is the name of the original settlement where Saint Kerran had his religious cell and where Campbeltown now stands.

Founded by William Mitchell, nephew of Springbank founder Archibald Mitchell, in 1872, Glengyle distillery remained in William's family until 1919 when it was bought by Highland Malt Distilleries.

Glengyle closed in 1923 and was stripped of its equipment, only the shell of the building survived.

Mitchells bought the remains of the Glengyle distillery next door to Springbank, extensive renovations finished in 2004 and production began again that year.
