Langmeil Jackaman's Cabernet 2009
Jackaman’s Vineyard is Langmeil’s finest and rarest Old Vine Garden Cabernet. Planted last century and lovingly tended by the colourful Barossan Arthur Jackaman, a World War II paratrooper, boxer and butcher who passed his small plot into Langmeil’s care upon retirement. Planted midway through last century at the southern end of Lyndoch in the Barossa Valley, the fruit from this single acre of low yielding Cabernet Sauvignon vines is hand-picked, gently destemmed, open fermented and basket pressed. This fruit combined with a 47-year-old parcel from one of our growers has produced a wine that has developed a deliciously intense perfume of black currants and blueberry with rich dark chocolates after two years in French oak hogsheads. The lead up to harvest, whilst quite dry, was relatively cool, apart from a burst of hot weather in late January to early February. Fortunately, the weather then settled to warm days and cool nights allowing the vineyards to recover and the majority of the grapes to ripen slowly, producing wines with excellent colour and flavour. While the volume is lower than 2008, quality is exciting, as the white wines are showing well, with Riesling being the stand out variety. It is an outstanding red wine year, with the wines exhibiting strong varietal character accompanied by an incredible depth of colour.
Bright, juicy fruits flow onto the palate which is medium to full-bodied. Some herbaceous notes mingle with spicy tones and sweet fruit is well balanced with firm but fine tannins which lengthen the fruitful and textured finish.
