MITOLO GAM MCLAREN VALE SHIRAZ

Mitolo is a family owned winery established in 1999 by Frank Mitolo. Mitolo's vision is to create individual, handcrafted premium wines built on passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer became a partner in the business in 2001. The fusion of Frank's intimate knowledge of the land and business acumen with Ben's winemaking talent has led to the creation of one of Australia's most exciting wineries.

The G.A.M. Shiraz comes from the Lopresti vineyard, and more specifically the Chinese Block, which is located at the southern end of McLaren Vale east of the coastal town of Port Willunga. The soil here is heavy grey loam mixed with black Biscay clay and sits above ancient Gnaltinga formation clay. This combination provides ideal conditions for growing fruit of intensity and balance. The climate here is maritime, with dry, warm, sunny days in the growing season and a fresh sea breeze that cools the air overnight.

2015 Vintage
Spring and early summer of 2015 were quite warm and very dry. Crucially, the majority of January and early February was abnormally cool, which allowed the fruit character to develop steadily, before the usual hot and very dry conditions returned. The 2015 vintage delivered high quality wines with great colour and bright, pure fruit flavours.  Each parcel of fruit for the G.A.M. was fermented on skins for approximately 10 days at controlled cool temperatures, to help preserve bright fruit characters without extracting any hard or bitter tannins from the skins and seeds. After being gently pressed and run down to French oak barrels (60% new), the wine was then matured for close to 18 months before blending and bottling.

The resulting wine is deeply coloured with an intensely aromatic nose of raspberry and plums with a hint of cinnamon spice. The complex palate is opulent and robust with ripe tannins and vibrant black fruit complemented by sweet spices and notes of clove and anise.

Suits prime cuts of red meats perfectly.

95 Points James Halliday

A lavish and luxuriant wine effortlessly presenting a ripe, soft tannin basket of red and black fruits of every description. Oak also plays a role, but of lesser moment than the fruit, tannins and bitter dark chocolate flavours.
