ONANNON MORNINGTON PENNINSULA PINOT NOIR

Onannon is the venture of Sam Middleton, Kaspar Hermann and Will Byron, who donated the last two or three letters of their surnames to come up with Onannon. “Our aim is quite simply to make good wine.” A noble and modest mission statement from this Pinot Noir-focussed producer that also dabbles in single site Gippsland Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris and Yarra Valley Rosé. Onannon is the venture of three friends who started small and are still small, but now they make 1,000 cases a year rather than the 80 they produced in 2008. They make wine with a ‘garage’ philosophy, backed up by quality fruit and shared winemaking experience. The wine is made in a small purpose built winery on the Mornington Peninsula, and the approach is as hands-on now as it was on day one.

The grapes are sourced from Red Hill on a site overlooking Port Philip Bay. The vines are 19 years old, planted predominately to MV6, with a small new planting of 777 clone (10 years old). The vineyard’s rich terra rossa soils are on a steep north-facing slope at 120 meters above sea level. All the grapes were hand harvested. A week post ferment maceration (15 days in total in fermenter). 15% whole bunch, minimal plunging, pressed to tank, then racked to barrel. 20% new French oak. Natural MLF. Racked twice in its 10 month barrel life before bottling. No fining or filtration. 10 months in barrel.

Gutsy, meaty Pinot Noir showing tremendous cherry and plum fruit and deeply herbal savoury notes. In spite of this the wine remains delicate and poised, with a great supporting cast of tannin and acidity. A wine with a real sense of place. Ideal with roasted or grilled poultry or game, roasted fish wrapped in pancetta & sage, or a medium rare rack of lamb.

"Good colour; has the power, line and length of its sibling, and adds a dimension from its plummy fruit. this has all the requisites for a 10+-year future."
