QUINTA DOS CARVALHAIS COLHEITA TINTO

Quinta dos Carvalhais is a beautiful property in Mangualde commune in the Dão. Purchased and invested in by the Guedes family, the estate combines the most up-to-date techniques with extensive experience of traditional winemaking practices, creating wines with elegance and personality. In addition to investing in their own vineyards, Quinta dos Carvalhais has also been instrumental in defending the interests and living conditions of many local small winegrowers who sell their grapes.

This 105 hectare property, which today has 50 hectares under vine, was purchased by the Guedes family in 1988. The vineyards were planted on poor granite soils with indigenous Dão varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, Jaen and Tinta Pinheira for reds and Encruzado, Assario, Verdelho, Bical and Cerceal for whites), and the modern winery was built soon afterwards. Today, winemaker Beatriz Cabral de Almeida makes an increasingly impressive range of wines from estate vineyards, which are situated at an altitude of 465-500 metres above sea level.

The start of the vegetative cycle in 2017 was unusually warm with irregular, sparse rainfall. Only during budburst and flowering in March did temperatures drop and precipitation levels rise for the duration of spring, replenishing the water levels in the soil. Although there was considerable rainfall, the estate's viticultural team managed to prevent diseases of any kind. The fertilisation phase from the evolution of the vines to the development of the grape clusters was successful and the dry hot summer was balanced by cooler fresh evenings during August and September which aided grape development. Some rainfall prior to the harvest also helped the final maturation of the grapes. The 2017 harvest was very similar to that of 2015, which produced wines of excellent quality.

Upon arrival at the modern winery at Quinta dos Carvalhais, the grapes were carefully unloaded into the crusher-destemmer. The resulting must was transferred by gravity into stainless steel temperature controlled fermentation tanks. The different grape varieties were fermented separately for around eight days and the Touriga Nacional was left on its skins for a further 10 days. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place, the wine was aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels. At the end of this period, the blend was made, and the wine was fined, filtered and bottled. The wine was bottled without cold stabilisation and therefore may throw a deposit during bottleageing. 

This wine has an intense red ruby colour and on the nose, aromas of black fruits and a menthol finish that imparts a wonderful freshness to its bouquet. The oak aromas are well integrated. On the palate, this wine is soft, elegant and balanced by its crisp acidity. This wine has a long persistent finish.
