Originally created by Gilbeys in the 19th Century, The last bottling of Redbreast under Gilbey's banner was in 1985. In 1986 Gilbey's entered an agreement to sell the brand name to Irish Distillers.
It was off the market for a period of approximately 10 years until Irish Distillers reintroduced it in 1991 as a pure pot still whiskey from the Midleton distillery in its distinctive "dumpy" bottle after a complete overall in its quality with a revamping of its wood program to include both sherry and bourbon barrels.
In recent years various expressions of the brand have now become available with 12 Year Old Cask, 15 year Old and 21 Year old additions. The 12 year old is one of the greatest value for money Irish Whiskies currently available.
While Redbreast has a devout following, the cask strength represents the purest form of Redbreast. Expect the usual Redbreast flavours but dialled up.
