Santa Gloria Carmenere
Carmenere is often described as 'Chile's variety, the same way Shiraz has been in Australia, Malbec in Argentina and Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand. The variety which they will dedicate themselves to and make the best version available in the World.
To a large degree Chile have been successful in carving that particular niche with the Carmenere indeed proving to enjoy the Chilean climate and conditions and producing great quality wines as a result.
Originally thought to be Merlot, Carmenere's spiritual home is in fact Bordeaux, and it often has been confused for Merlot due to its similarity in style, but good Carmenere does differ quite a bit from good Merlto. You come to expect denser wines, more green, leafty and mity flavours and dark chocolate. Its a variety we really do enjoy very much when done well.
The Santa Gloria Carmenere while at the entry point in terms of price, does really deliver a great bang-for-buck and has all the quality hallmarks you expect from Carmenere made in a slightly lighter fruitier style.
Try with your next pizza, or Moroccan lamb dish for a lovely match.
