Two Paddocks Pinot Noir 2018
The flagship from Two Paddocks – an organically grown barrel selection from the estate properties. In 2016 this wine was produced from the four Neill family Central Otago vineyards. These small sites are high-density planted in a range of clonal material cropped to under 5 Tonne per hectare with most vineyard practices carried out by hand. As in the vineyard, the wine is handcrafted using traditional methods including a 25% whole bunch, indigenous fermentation and hand plunging. Maturation is in French barriques for 10 months, using a mix of older and new (20%) barrels.
Aromatically this wine exhibits dried herb with dark spice and bramble fruit spectrum, leading to an elegant textural mouthfeel showing minerality, great balance and drive.

I am a big fan of Two Paddocks wines and the 2018 Pinot Noir is no exception. This has nearly all you would want from a Pinot Noir but probably needs to put on some weight in terms of age. This has wonderful red fruit aromas with dark cherry and raspberry to the fore with soft tannins. Long and satisfying finish. Its delicate and quite feminine at present but will not take too long to develop. I left a 4 month gap between my first and second bottles and saw a definite improvement. Lots of great potential food matches but I think rare pan-fried duck breast is its food soul-mate!
