Balcón de Pilatos is one of our most iconic vineyards and is a prime site for growing a very distinctive, violet-scented Maturana, a grape variety that was lost in Rioja due to phylloxera during 1920-30. In 2001, we were pioneers in recovering this special grape variety from 35 strains found in a vineyard over 100 years old. After studying the variety in different areas, we decided to plant it in our 8.2-hectare Balcón de Pilatos vineyard, located at 500 meters in Rioja Alavesa, which stands out in three terraces overlooking Oyón, Logroño and the Sierra de Cantabria. Its altitude, as well as its climatic and soil conditions, make it perfect for the cultivation of this minority grape variety, a Rioja exclusive with a great personality.
Lively, rich bigarreau cherry colour. Complex and powerful in the nose with ripe black fruit and spicy accents, such as cocoa and vanilla as well as subtle dashes of almond and cedar blossom. Smooth, plush and chocolatey with fine tannins, stylish oak integration and grassy, cassis-like finish.
