Woodstock Scott Collett Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Made from 52% Shiraz and 48% Cabernet Sauvignon this is nothing short of an incredible wine with a staggering density of fruit but also tear-jerking delicacy and tenderness too. The nose is upon you like a thunderclap and then there is quiet as you explore the flora and fauna of the wild McLaren Vale countryside. Iodine-soaked sea breezes refresh every mighty sip and it seems like this debut release has been honed for a century such is its precision and confidence. The tannins are military drilled, all facing the same direction so that in spite of their scale, they all lockstep and know exactly what they are doing on your palate. In among the more malevolent black fruit tones, there are wonderfully extravagant flashes of completely unexpected flavours – Piedmonte hazelnuts, Salmiak liquorice, Alain Passard’s beetroot tartare and the finest Jamon Iberico de Bellota. This is fabulous and it is exactly what 100 Best is all about – celebrating masterful and individual winemaking which showcases the precise locations from which the grapes have been grown.
