GROSSET POLISH HILL
Jeffrey Grosset established his winery in 1981 in the historic township of Auburn Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish and functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to the Grosset estate-owned vineyards and winemaking. Jeff is best known for his Rieslings which have shown a consistency of style and quality, making this one of Australia’s greatest wineries. By combining a disciplined approach and decades of experience, Grosset consistently achieves the purest expression of variety and place.
The eight-hectare Polish Hill vineyard (ACO certified organic) is at 460 metres altitude and just five kilometres from Springvale. The infertile, shaley soil is slightly acidic and its topsoil has a clay and shale crust. The vines have to work harder than those at Springvale and so produce smaller distinctly flavoured and concentrated berries.
2017 is Grosset's third consecutive outstanding vintage. This makes 2017, 2016 and 2015 the best run of seasons they have ever experienced. The 2017 vintage was a full month later than the previous two. It was almost European in character with much higher rainfall during the growing season.
The organic grapes were hand harvested and delivered promptly to the winery in small parcels, where they were crushed and destemmed. The fruit was then gently pressed and settled in tank for five days at 0°C. Only the free run juice was used. A small proportion was whole-bunch pressed. A strong fermentation was carried out at low temperature in stainless steel tanks to ensure clean pristine varietal characters were preserved. Blending of the wine occured over a number of weeks before bottling in July 2017.
The late harvest has produced an extraordinary and very different 'Polish Hill'. Voluminous floral aromatics, with hints of talc and lavender, produce an exhuberant youthfulness that gives vitality to a palate fleshed out by concentrated lime juice. The tight structure is there without the steeliness; controlled power, intensity and that characteristic ultra-dry character that thrills on the finish. A great 'Polish Hill' adding a touch of difference to the legend.

"This is a ravishing riesling of the highest order, X-factor multiplied. Throw up any part (flesh, juice, skin, pith) of lime or lemons of any kind, add ethereal acidity and marvel at the elegance and length of the palate. Jeffrey Grosset is the undisputed king of the Clare Valley."
