Poggio al Tesoro Bolgheri Mediterra 2019

Poggio al Tesoro is a 70 hectare property in Bolgheri acquired in 2002 by the Allegrini family. The first vineyard they bought, Le Sondraie, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented by them. It is 50 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Vermentino.

Fruit for this wine is sourced from the Le Sondraie vineyard. The vines face west/south-west and are planted at an altitude of just 25 metres above sea level. Soils here are well-drained and composed of clay and sandy silt with a high presence of magnesium and iron. The vines are spur cordon trained with a very high density of planting (7,936 vines per hectare) producing low yields.

Winter was marked by mild temperatures with lower temperatures between January and February. Ideal rainfall in the spring saw sharp drops in temperature until the end of May, putting a strain on vegetative growth. Poggio Al Tesoro used protective and stimulating factors, such as algae and natural substances which could boost the vines’ energy, to support the vines in this delicate period. Flowering, fruit set and veraison were good and well balanced overall, thanks to a stabilisation of the weather conditions. Light rainfalls in July supported the vines just as they were showing signs of water stress. August was characterized by cool nights, good daytime breezes and some light showers. By harvest time, the temperatures had risen, but only for a few days: September was marked by dry, breezy, mild days which allow grapes to ripen fully and with an excellent balance between sugar and acidity levels.

After destemming and soft pressing, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures of 26-28°C for 12 days. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to second-use French oak barriques where it was aged for eight months.

This is a fragrant and intensely fruity red wine, with aromas of blackberries, plums and cherries interwoven with white pepper and elegant herbaceous notes. This blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is a fresh, easy-drinking wine that nevertheless expresses the rich complexity of Bolgheri.
